MBR membrane is designed to replace the secondary sedimentation tank in traditional water treatment methods and is very common in modern water treatment projects. The below article will show you the process and working principle of the MBR membrane.

MBR Membrane – Working Principle

MBR membrane is to immerse the membrane module into the activated sludge reaction tank. Through negative pressure suction, the water in the activated sludge biological reaction tank is filtered by the membrane and discharged or reused. Standard MBR membranes are divided into microfiltration and ultrafiltration. The principle is that the macromolecules in the water are trapped on the surface of the membrane by pressure, and the water molecules can freely pass through the membrane.

MBR Membrane - Design And Working Principle

Design of MBR Membrane

MBR membrane can be divided into the flat sheet and the hollow fiber MBR. Hollow fiber MBR is also called “curtain-type MBR” because of its appearance and structure, similar to a “door curtain”. The flat sheet is a double-layer structure with an inner lining sheet containing a support layer with high mechanical strength. The design process has the following differences.

Flat Sheet MBR membrane: A flat sheet membrane consists of the filter, diversion cloth, baffle plate, and water outlet spout.

Hollow fiber MBR membrane: The hollow fiber MBR membrane element is filamentous, and the tensile strength of the membrane fibers made of PVDF can exceed 200N.

Except for the difference between the MBR membrane core elements, the external structure are all made of 304 stainless steel or carbon steel.

MBR Membrane Treatment Process Flow

In the water treatment system, the membrane module is one of the components. It cannot work alone and must work with related equipment. These equipment materials include a biochemical treatment system, blower and water pump system, electrical control system, valves, and pipeline system.

Their working state determines the performance of the membrane module, which in turn determines whether the membrane bioreactor can complete the commissioning. The following is a flow chart of the complete MBR membrane treatment process.

How to Clean the MBR Membrane?

How to Clean the MBR Membrane?

Once the MBR membrane is polluted, the membrane pores will be clogged, and the flux will drop. Therefore, we must clean the MBR membrane module to restore the membrane flux and extend its life span. The following is a detailed explanation of how to clean the MBR membrane.

Total Phosphorus Exceedance Causes and Solutions

Total Phosphorus (TP) Exceedance – Causes and Solutions

Denitrification and phosphorus removal processes are increasingly common in wastewater treatment. However, exceeding Total Phosphorus (TP) levels in the treated water often brings challenges during operational practice.

What are the disadvantages of hollow fiber membrane

What are the Disadvantages of Hollow Fiber Membrane?

While hollow fiber membranes have several benefits, they also come with specific challenges, from fouling issues to their inherent fragility.

Knowing these challenges in detail can help users make well-informed decisions and optimize their filtration systems.

How Often Should We Replace the MBR Membrane?
