The cleaning cycle of the MBR membrane depends on the inlet water quality. If the water quality is better, the cleaning cycle can be longer. Clean the MBR membrane regularly can also extend its service life.

How Often Should We Clean The MBR Membrane?

MBR membranes do not have a fixed cleaning cycle. The operation and maintenance of different MBR membrane systems will affect the cleaning cycle of the membranes. The chemical cleaning cycle of the MBR membrane is around once every 3-6 months, depending on water quality and system maintenance. The cleaning cycle will be extended if the influent water is in the standard range for entering MBR membranes. And regular maintenance and additional maintenance can extend the service life of the MBR membrane. The MBR maintenance is usually carried out once per 3-6 months to effectively remove pollutants on the surface of MBR membrane fiber from fouling.

What Are The MBR Membrane Cleaning Methods?

The cleaning methods of MBR membrane mainly include online maintenance cleaning, enhanced online cleaning, and offline cleaning.
When cleaning the MBR membrane, we can lift out the membrane module or pull out the membrane element for cleaning. The variety of offline cleaning methods for flat sheet MBR membrane also solves the problem that the site is small and unsuitable for lifting.
MBR membranes have a longer cleaning cycle, up to 3 months. If the working pressure is always relatively low, it may not need cleaning. Flat sheet membrane modules can also restore the membrane flux by physical cleaning methods such as low-pressure water flushing.

How To Clean The MBR Membrane?

Step 1: Stop the suction pump and close the water pipe.

Step 2: Stay for 1 minute, and close the blower to stop aeration.

Step 3: Open the dosing pipe, run the dosing pump, and inject the cleaning solution.

Step 4: Dilute the residual chlorine in the treated water before discharge.

Or return the treated water to the aerobic tank for residual chlorine dilution.

Step 5: Finish the above operations, open the suction pipe, run the suction pump, and resume regular operation.

What Are The Chemicals For Cleaning The MBR Membrane?

Type of chemical: NaClO, effective chlorine concentration 100~500ppm; 0.1 – 0.2% HCl, citric acid or oxalic acid.

Chemical cleaning duration: 5 ~ 10 min.

Cleaning frequency: TMP increases by more than 30 kPa or per 12 to 36 weeks after operating.

Record the duration when the TMP at the initial stabilization increases by 30 kPa and set it as one cycle. Regularizing the chemical cleaning can effectively extend the service life of the membrane.

The above is the information about how often we should clean the MBR membrane. If you still have related questions about the membrane bioreactor, please feel free to contact SPERTA.
