Can We Clean The MBR Membrane With Sodium Hypochlorite?

Table of Contents

The cleaning frequency of the MBR membrane and the choice of the cleaning agent determine the final filtration effect of the membrane bioreactor. Some people think we can use sodium hypochlorite as the cleaning agent, but some people don’t think so.

Can we clean the MBR membrane with Sodium Hypochlorite?

Yes. We can clean the MBR membrane with sodium hypochlorite. There are many cleaning agents for membrane bioreactor, and sodium hypochlorite is one of them and is used very frequently. It is an oxidant cleaning solution, which is more effective in reducing COD in the feed water.

How to clean the MBR Membrane with Sodium Hypochlorite Agents?

We can use sodium hypochlorite cleaning agents in online and offline MBR membrane chemical cleaning. Whichever methods to use are mainly determined according to the actual situation of the membrane bioreactor. Here we are introducing the online chemical cleaning procedure with sodium hypochlorite. The specific steps are as follows:

Step 1: Drain raw water inside the membrane bioreactor system and ensure no more water is produced.

Step 2: Determine the dosage of sodium hypochlorite cleaning agent according to the product water quality. After preparing the cleaning agent, input the cleaning solution in a low flow state.

Step 3: Replace the raw water that has not been drained from the system with the cleaning agent. Let the sodium hypochlorite cleaning solution circulate to clean the mbr membrane and ensure that the temperature of the cleaning solution is in a constant state.

Step 4: Stop the operation of the dosing pump and soak the MBR membrane element for about 30 minutes. If the pollution is severe, we can appropriately extend the soaking time.

Step 5: After soaking, use a high-flow pump for circulating cleaning.

Step 6: Release the sodium hypochlorite cleaning solution and rinse the mbr membrane with clean water. During this period, the temperature of the incoming water should be kept stable. After rinsing, check the PH value of the produced water. When the PH value of the produced water returns to the normal state, we can end the cleaning.

Precautions during cleaning with sodium hypochlorite.

  1. When using sodium hypochlorite to clean the MBR membrane, pay attention to the concentration of the cleaning agent. After cleaning, the MBR membrane must be rinsed to ensure that no sodium hypochlorite remains in the membrane bioreactor. If sodium hypochlorite remains on the membrane element, it may damage the structure of the MBR membrane fibers, causing damage to the membrane element.
  2. When the MBR membrane’s flux is very low, a cleaning test can be carried out. If the test result is very effective for removing pollutants, it proves that the cleaning method is effective.
  3. Sodium hypochlorite also harms the human body, so please wear protective gear, goggles, and other protective equipment in advance when performing chemical cleaning operations.

All cleaning agent contains chemical components, and so does sodium hypochlorite. Therefore, we must confirm the water quality of the product before cleaning, and the sodium hypochlorite cleaning agent should be prepared according to the water quality. What is MBR Membrane Fouling?

What Is MBR Membrane Fouling?

MBR Membrane fouling is the formation of impurity particles, colloidal particles, and solute macromolecules on the membrane surface or in the membrane pores due to physical, chemical, or mechanical interactions with the membrane during the water treatment process.

How To Store The Hollow Fiber MBR Membrane?

When we store the hollow fiber MBR membrane, it is necessary to keep the membrane elements hydrophilic. If it is dehydrated and dried, its performance will be significantly reduced.
